Working together for a strong community.
At Opus Newton, every resident will commit to volunteering 10 hours per month to make our community a better and stronger place. We call it Opus Time. The goals and benefits of this program are multifaceted. As residents work together for the benefit of all, friendships will form, connections will be made, and a culture of reciprocity, meaning and purpose will evolve. Studies have also shown volunteering can improve overall cognitive function in older adults, lowering the risk for dementia, anxiety, and depression.
Booker T. Washington famously said, “Those who are happiest are those who do the most for others.” Everyone has something to offer, and at Opus Newton, you can choose to volunteer in ways that align with your skills and interests. Do you have a passion you’d love to share by leading a class? Do it. Maybe you see yourself in a support role. There will be plenty of opportunities. Are you a social butterfly? Perhaps you’ll help host future residents in our café. Animal lover? You could even volunteer to walk your neighbor’s dog. We’re always open to your ideas. After all, that’s where we find the most creative suggestions come from.

“Having the volunteer aspect will help us and everyone else come out of our shells and get to know each other and be part of the community in a way that will happen more quickly and more deeply than it would without volunteering.” —Opus Member
“The future of every community lies in capturing the passion, imagination and resources of its people.”
—Ernesto Sirolli
“I think the volunteering requirement is absolutely inspired. It’s one of the things I love about the Opus concept, because I believe that volunteering creates community. It brings out the best in people.” —Opus Member
How will volunteering work at Opus?
Each resident of Opus Newton will commit to volunteering 10 or more hours per month within the Opus community. There will be a variety of roles to explore — even ones you may suggest yourself — and a full-time volunteer coordinator will support you in finding the right match, provide training, and fine-tune volunteer opportunities.
Volunteer opportunities will generally fall into one of three categories: resident-to-resident; resident-to-program; and resident-to-operations. You’ll never be locked into a single role; your volunteer role can change as your interests or abilities change over time. The volunteer coordinator will work with you to match your interests with the needs of the community.
